Total Upstream Companies recently launched a week long HIV/AIDS awareness campaign for truck drivers in the Federal Capital Territory in order to check the disease.
The event was organized in collaboration with Public Health and Community Development Centre (PHCDC), a Non- Governmental Organization with other stakeholders.
During the campaign, participants benefited from free eye tests, height/ weight checks, blood pressure checks, blood and HIV/STD tests.
Deputy Corps Commandant of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Uche Wihioka, said although the campaign is targeted at truck drivers, their spouses and possible sex partners, the campaign will go through the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in order to reach as many as 2.5 million people.
Speaking earlier, Total's General Manager (Corporate CSR), Dr. Justus Pearse, said thus: "For us at Total, we regard HIV as a chronic communicable disease and hence stigmatization is not allowed. We would like to encourage you all here to embark on voluntary testing and pre/post counselling in the spirit of this flag-off and the entire campaign."
Also commenting, Medical Director of the PHCDC, Dr. Ima Kashim, said the well being of drivers is of great concern to all road users, hence the campaign is vital."
In a goodwill message, President of NURTW, Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, represented by Deputy General Secretary, Chief John Olaoye, said the union gives priority to the safety and health of her members and the society at large.
Other Stakeholders at the event were the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Nigerian Business Coalition against AIDS (NIBUCAA), FRSC, FCT Agency for the Control of AIDS (FACA), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).
Highlights of the occasion were the presentation of certificates to 40 Peer educators who had earlier been trained to administer and counsel participants before and after the tests.
The organisers also announced the toll free numbers of '122 and 622' on cases of reckless driving or HIV concerns so that FRSC or NACA can respond immediately.
