Jakarta National AIDS Commission (KPA) noted that 2,605 cases of HIV/AIDS happened along 2011. To solve these cases, Jakarta Provincial Government and Jakarta KPA are continuously conducting various efforts to cure AIDS sufferers. One of those efforts is by building 32 hospitals and 19 community health centers (puskesmas) in the city which equipped with HIV/AIDS services.
Jakarta KPA Secretary Rohana Manggala said her party is happy with this fact because it proves that Jakarta residents are not ashamed anymore to report HIV/AIDS case and willing to get treatment. Those 2,605 cases are divided into 1,273 HIV cases and 1,332 AIDS cases.
“For death rate last year reached 234 people. Besides from the central government, puskesmas in Jakarta have also served methadone treatment,” stated Rohana during the 2012 Archipelago AIDS Night Contemplation (MRAN) at Raden Ajeng Kartini Monument, Monas, Central Jakarta, Saturday (6/9).
According to her, the cumulative number of HIV/AIDS cases in the city since 1987 up to 2011 reached 11,205 cases which consist of 5,555 HIV cases and 5,650 AIDS cases. “Over 1,000 people died and 70 percent of them were syringe users,” explained Rohana.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo admitted HIV/AIDS rate in Jakarta is still high. The city government responded this fact by providing medical aid. “HIV/AIDS case in Jakarta is the second higest after Papua. We respond it with accountable medical efforts. This is government’s obligation,” he exclaimed.
To eradicate HIV/AIDS case, the government needs assistance from its residents. Fauzi also told that there must be institutions that can convince Jakarta residents, especially HIV/AIDS high risk groups, to apply healthy lifestyle. “I thanked to the activists and NGOs for their approach by holding socializations to residents so the amount of HIV/AIDS case doesn’t increase,” he expressed.
MRAN itself is a community activity held every year simultaneously around the world. In Indonesia, this activity has been implemented since 1991. This is a non-political activity that invites everyone to forget their busy for a while and do contemplation about AIDS.
