svenSven Paardekooper

Sven was born and raised in Holland, Europe. After coming out as being gay to his family, Sven moved to Los Angeles in 1992 to commence his pursuit of happiness. Just when he thought his life was on track and things were good, he was handed a piece of paper that read “Test Results: Positive.” The date was July 5, 2001: Sven's pursuit veered off track!

His career had included domestic television syndication for a children’s show, being a personal assistant for a few newsworthy celebrities and a venture in the corporate environment. None of these experiences prepared him for the road ahead.

Coming to terms with HIV and battling a Crystal Meth addiction at the same time, he started to write to preserve his sanity and to escape the demons inside of his head. It became the only way he knew how to process and manage the events that were happening in his life.

A decade has passed since he tested HIV+. Since then, Sven has written over 300 pages and watched every aspect of his life change. Today, Sven is a happy, healthy and stronger person because of what happened. He shares his experiences and works as a consultant in HIV and substance abuse prevention. In 2005 the City of Los Angeles presented him with a Certificate of Commendation for all of his efforts.

All of this is because he tested positive, re-engaged in living, and allowed his life to become all of that: a complete Positive. While his life has changed completely, the one thing that remains the same is his desire to make a difference and to be remembered for that effect.

For in the end, isn’t that really what we all want—just to be remembered?

svenBefore you say anything: I know! Really, I KNOW!!!

I can’t tell you what exactly, but I know. Sorry it has been such a long while since y’all last heard from us. Between painting, packing, moving, unpacking, settling in and catching a breath time has just flown by. Then again, it really only has been 5 weeks so it’s not that long.

Where to start? We love Dallas. It has been, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we have ever made. Our new home is such a place of peace and tranquility; we sit each morning and just beam in the happiness that this has become. Let me paint you a picture: our living room boasts 17 foot ceilings, with windows to match. The whole community, including our home, is surrounded by old oak trees which filter the morning sun as it rises from the bottom window to the top of the 17 foot window….

svenPull up a chair; grab a coffee or a drink. Shut down your phone and relax. This will be a long one!

What an amazingly superb and wonderful trip. Can we just start with that? And then I would like to follow it by saying how proud I am to not only be a DUTCH citizen but to also carry the last name of Paardekooper. (You may want to trade up that coffee to something stronger!)

Is the title too confusing? Maybe a little schizo? Probably a fairly decent reflection of the craziness that is our lives right now.

So we are officially the proud owners of our new home! We closed about a week ago and have made such strides since. The house had been sitting empty since last July and the previous owner, bless her heart, had such an affinity for blue/gray that the whole house was done in those colors…and I mean the WHOLE house. Tile, carpet, walls, doors, wallpaper, window coverings…

It was so blue you could feel the blues set in…get it…hahaha.

My Love Letter

I used to write about this ideal I held about relationships. I always knew, in my hearts of hearts, that there was a relationship based on complete love, attraction, and utter trust. I always knew that within that relationship all boundaries and limitations would disappear and both people could be truly who they were born to be.

I used to write about it, I used to think about it all the time.

And all the writing and all the thinking was for none because when I met you I understood that there are times when words and thoughts are utterly inadequate to describe the beauty at hand.

Inspired by the recent Mormon campaign, I have decided to write and publish my very own PSA, Public Service Announcement.

I think the most common misperception is that somehow we are all part of this “cult,” this secret society.   We’re really not.  We are just like everybody else.   I laugh when people come up to me and say “You know my uncle is one too, maybe you know him?”   We DO NOT all know each other.  There is no monthly newsletter.

sven

Howdy y’all.

So how’s your week being going? We’re doing well down here in Texas! Had a visit to the ER, some spinal stimulator implants. You know: run of the mill kinda stuff.

If you haven’t watched it yet, be sure to go to my website and check out the pod cast of last week’s review. It is something new I am trying that will hopefully help me in reaching more people. Other than the fact that I REALLY need a haircut and that it is strange hearing your own voice, I think I did pretty good!
